Referendum on new Constitution of Belarus to take place no later than February 2022

A referendum on a new version of the Belarusian Constitution will be held no later than February 2022, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he took part in the extended session of the Constitutional Commission on 28 September, BelTA has learned.

“It is very important to ensure that all the work on the constitutional construction serves as a basis for consolidation of the Belarusian society and lays a solid legal foundation for the country's development in the future. I am sure it will be so, because the people will make the final decision. As I have already said, the referendum will take place no later than February 2022,” the president said.

In his words, there are different points of view in society, especially among people who have done a lot for the formation of the state. There are, in particular, those who believe that a referendum is unnecessary and that we should go the present way without changing the Constitution. “It cannot be accepted. We have promised to have a referendum on the Constitution. We were asked to make changes. We understood ourselves that the essence of life is to change all the time. Every change needs to serve only good purposes. Changes need to serve evolutionary development,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

“The Constitution ensures normal movement forward. Let us see it as changes. Changes need to be based on the fundamentals. Everything should be legal. The Constitution will lay the foundation for these changes,” the head of state stressed.
