Lukashenko: Belarus will remain a welfare state

Belarus will remain a welfare state, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with the MPs of the House of Representatives and members of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus of the seventh convocation on 21 March, BelTA has learned.

“The benchmark in Parliament’s connection to the public has become the approach, when the state does not just take care of all the person’s issues, but creates necessary conditions so that this person could solve them independently. I think this is the right thing. Assistance to socially vulnerable categories will remain one of the priorities of our policy, and Belarus will invariably remain a welfare state,” Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized.

The president praised the huge work conducted by the MPs to provide targeted support to the most vulnerable categories of citizens: large families, lonely elderly people, the disabled, and orphans.

MPs and senators took an active part in solving people’s issues, held thousands of person-to-person meetings, call-in events, meetings with personnel. “All this together gave you the opportunity to feel the pulse of society and be together with people,” the head of state said. “I hope that the good traditions of interaction with the population laid down by you will be taken up by new MPs.”

Many citizens' appeals were discussed during the drafting of laws and other normative legal acts, the president added.

According to him, state and self-government bodies successfully apply the approaches initiated and practiced by Parliament, which contribute to the consolidation of the fundamental principles of interaction with the public and the development of modern domestic standards in this area.

The president positively assessed such an institution of interaction with people as public discussion of draft laws: “This has made it possible to establish feedback with the population, take into account reasonable suggestions of citizens when preparing decisions.”

Speaking about the interaction between MPs and young people, Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “Of course, MPs and senators should meet with young people and talk about the preservation of historical memory, implementation of the state youth policy. The Youth Council at the National Assembly is also a good example of reaching out to the younger generation. The young people saw your work in Parliament. You set an example of how to secure conscientious performance of duties.”
