The first meeting of the seventh Belarusian People’s Congress is scheduled for 24-25 April, Prime Minister, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Belarusian People’s Congress Roman Golovchenko told reporters, BelTA has learned.
“On the first day, mostly organizational and electoral issues will be considered. This meeting will be special. It will carry out a number of procedures envisaged by the law: to elect working bodies, the counting commission, the chair of the Belarusian People’s Congress, the deputy chair, the presidium of the Belarusian People’s Congress (the permanent body), to adopt temporary regulations for the Belarusian People’s Congress. On the second day, the delegates will discuss issues on the agenda,” the head of government said.
According to Roman Golovchenko, preparations for this meeting are proceeding as planned. He noted that the president gave an instruction to make this event “solemn, remarkable, memorable,” since the forthcoming meeting of the Belarusian People’s Congress will be the first meeting in the constitutional status.
“All our proposals have been accepted by and large, so we will continue with preparations in line with the decisions that we have put forward and agreed upon,” the prime minister said commenting on the results of the meeting with the head of state.
An agenda for the first meeting of the seventh Belarusian People’s Congress has already been drafted. The delegates are to discuss Belarus’ new national security concept and military doctrine, among other things.
“We have discussed a number of issues related to the constitutional powers of the Belarusian People’s Congress, and whether some other issues should be raised. Thus, the draft agenda might be revised to include some additions,” added the chairman of the organizing committee. “After all, the Belarusian People’s Congress has quite broad powers: to institute public holidays and memorial days, make personnel decisions. Therefore, perhaps there will be some other changes to the agenda.”
