Vitebsk celebrates 100th anniversary of Kasimir Malevich’s Black Square

VITEBSK, 9 October (BelTA) - The Vitebsk Regional History Museum has arranged an exhibition of paintings, art objects and installations of the members of the Vitebsk Arts Union "Kvadrat" - Galina and Vasily Vasilyevs, Alexander Malei, Alexander Dosuzhev, Tatiana Makdetsova, Alexandra Slepova, and also suprematists from Minsk Anastasia Goncharova and Vladimir Makarkova, BelTA learned.

The exhibition includes 36 works made in various techniques: acrylic on canvas, oil on plywood, art objects from textile, plastics and polyurethane foam, and also figurative supermatism. The works were made in different times. The organizers have put together both the exhibits with a twenty-year history, and those that have been created this year. They are all built around one theme of black square. Many of the works are a dedication to Kasimir Malevich.

Kasimir Malevich exhibited his first Black Square at the Last Futurist Exhibition 0,10 in Petrograd in 1915. A black square placed against the sun appeared for the first time in the scenery designs for the Futurist opera Victory over the Sun in 1913. The second Black Square was painted around 1923.

In 1919, Malevich worked as a teacher in the people’s art school run by Marc Chagall in Vitebsk.
