Remains of Francysk Skaryna’s school unearthed in Polotsk
VITEBSK, 15 August (BelTA) – Archeologists have found remains of the Bernardine monastery where Francysk Skaryna got primary education, BelTA learned from Denis Duk, head of the native and universal history department of the Polotsk State University, who was in charge of the archeological excavation project. According to the scientists, the renowned Belarusian scholar from Polotsk started learning Latin at the school in the Bernardine monastery. Up to the present the exact location of the monastery was unknown. Historians had only assumed where it could be and had a plan of the monastery. This summer archeologists discovered the remains of the foundation that matched the plan. Scientists also found holy vessels which belonged to the Bernardines, dishes, glazed tile, etc. According to Denis Duk, it is impossible to turn this area into a museum as this is a densely-populated neighborhood. However, the tourist map of the ancient city can be extended with another historic landmark.БЕЛТА
