Puppet Quarter project to debut at Slavonic Bazaar in Vitebsk

VITEBSK, 18 June (BelTA) - Five productions of puppet theaters of Belarus and Russia will be shown at Slavonic Bazaar in Vitebsk as part of the Puppet Quarter project, BelTA learned from the Vitebsk culture center. All productions will be shown on stage of the Belarusian theater Lyalka.

The Puppet Quarter project will feature the theaters from St. Petersburg, Yaroslavl, Minsk and Vitebsk. The project will start on 9 July with the Queen of Spades by the Grodno regional puppet theater based on Alexander Pushkin’s story and Tchaikovsky's Opera. The Puppet Format Theater from St. Petersburg and the Yaroslavl regional puppet theater will show The Mermaid of Light from the village of Peremilovo. The fairytale was inspired by the paintings of Moscow artist Vladimir Lyubarov. Prepared with the support of the culture committee of St. Petersburg, the production was nominated for the Russian National Theater Award Golden Mask in 2013. The Puppet Format will also present Rider CUPRUM (about the creation of St. Petersburg based on the ideas by filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov). The puppet poetic drama is about the love of a girl to the sea and the city of St. Petersburg and is full of quotes from Alexander Pushkin, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Dmitry Merezhskovsky, Daniil Kharms, Vladimir Nabokov, Andrei Bely, Andrei Bitov, Alexei Khvostenko, Felix Lourie and other authors. The Belarusian Theater Lyalka will present the Decameron (an improvisation based on Giovanni Boccaccio) and Bremen Town Musicians.

The 23rd edition of the International Festival of Arts Slavonic Bazaar in Vitebsk will be held from 10 to 14 July. Representatives of 30 countries will take part in the festival.
