‘I showed him his photo’. Why Svetlogorsk resident asks Lukashenko for autograph
The story took place in 2020 during the opening of the Ola war memorial in Svetlogorsk District. The opening ceremony was attended not only by descendants of the winners of that terrible war, but also the people who had to go through it. Among the attendees was Nina Krasnova, a former prisoner of a Nazi concentration camp.
Despite the fact that she had to bear the brunt of war as a child, she did not turn violent or desperate. She headed a team of plasterers and painters that helped build many necessary facilities in Svetlogorsk. Among them were kindergartens, schools, a shopping center, and many more. Nina Krasnova also took an active part in the social and political life of the country. She was, for example, a delegate of the second Belarusian People’s Congress. In 2003 she was awarded the Honorary Citizen of Svetlogorsk title.
In 2020 the opening ceremony of the Ola war memorial was held with the participation of the head of state. It comes as no surprise given the president’s attitude to history. Following the official part of the ceremony, Nina Krasnova addressed Aleksandr Lukashenko with an unusual request.
“Why did I decide to address the president? I was sitting in the front row, and he was very close to me. I showed him his photo. He approached me and I asked him for an autograph. He signed the photo and shook my hand,” the woman recalled.
“I was not scared at all. I felt that he was the kindest person. What did he seem like? A true human being,” Nina Krasnova added.
