Delegations of 16 towns to celebrate Polotsk’s 1150th anniversary

VITEBSK, 22 May (BelTA) – Official delegations of 16 partner towns of Polotsk will take part in the celebration of the 1150th anniversary of the oldest town in Belarus, representatives of the Ideology Department of the Polotsk Town Executive Committee told BelTA. The number includes towns in Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, and Germany. The list of Polotsk’s partner towns will grow larger during the celebration. An agreement on cooperation in economy and culture is expected to be signed with the town of Alaverdi, Armenia on 26 May. Apart from representatives of the towns that have signed a partnership agreement with Polotsk delegations from Polotsk’s Russian contemporaries – Izborsk and Maloyaroslavets – will arrive to congratulate the hero of the anniversary. By the way, Maloyaroslavets has restored an 1812 Patriotic War monument just like Polotsk has. The new monument was cast in Polotsk. The number of foreign guests will include heads of seven embassies. Diplomatic missions of Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, the UK, China, Estonia, and Iran have confirmed they will participate in the event. A lot of tourists are expected to arrive in Polotsk. For their convenience the official website of the town administration now has a special page with the program of the event, location of places of interest in the celebration area and a lot of other useful information. The celebration will start on 25 May to last till 5 June. Every day will bring a lot of pleasant surprises and entertainment ranging from fairs to meetings with medieval knights. Mass media coverage will be provided for those unable to personally visit the jubilee of Belarus’ oldest town. More than 100 mass media representatives have been accredited to attend the celebration in Polotsk.
