Belarus win three medals at International Earth Science Olympiad 2021

Belarusian school students under the tutelage of BSU professors won gold and two silver medals at the 14th edition of the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO 2021), BelTA learned from the press service of Belarusian State University (BSU).

The event was held from 25 to 30 August in an online format in individual and team events. Young geographers performed tasks to determine minerals and rocks, to build an axial section. They also considered the issues of seismic and volcanic activity and their impact on people and the economy, etc.

According to the team event rules, participants were divided into international teams to solve problematic cases related to the impact of the pandemic on the geographical shell, climate warming and the ecology of the World Ocean.

Nikita Vikharev, a tenth-grader of Grodno Gymnasium No.1 named after Academician E.F. Karski, won gold as part of the team of students from Estonia, Finland, France, Iran and Italy. The student was also awarded silver in the individual event. Graduate of Mogilev State Oblast Lyceum No.3 Leonid Polkhovsky who represented the the team from Finland, Germany, Iran, Norway, UAE and Estonia, won a silver medal in the group event.

Belarus was also represented by Ilya Tucha, a graduate of Baranovichi Gymnasium No.1, Daniil Vasilyuk, a tenth-grader of Gomel Secondary School No.24, Roman Penyaz, an 11th- grader of Slutsk Gymnasium No. 1, and Nazar Fomichev, a student of Vitebsk Gymnasium No. 2.

The Belarusian team was led by dean of the Geography and Geoinformatics Faculty of the Belarusian State University Dmitry Kurlovich and associate professor of Economic and Social Geography Department of the same faculty Andrei Bezruchenok.

Russia was the organizer of the 14th edition of the International Earth Science Olympiad. A total of 185 students from 35 countries took part in the event.
