Belarus, Russia working on oral bacterial COVID-19 vaccine

Belarusian and Russian scientists are working on the world's first bacterial COVID-19 vaccine to be administered through consumption of dairy products, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Aleksandr Sergeyev said at the plenary session of the 8th Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia on 1 July, BelTA has learned.

“Coronavirus response is high on the Belarus-Russia cooperation agenda,” Aleksandr Sergeyev said. “At a meeting between the presidiums of our academies of sciences three months ago, we decided to work together to trial the world's first bacterial COVID-19 vaccine,” he added.

“Such a vaccine can be easily produced at facilities that do not require certification to work with pathogens. It can be made quickly and in almost unlimited amounts. It is also easy to administer a dose of this vaccine by consuming it with dairy products,” he noted.

“Conducting the preclinical and clinical trials of the first bacterial vaccine against COVID-19 would enable our countries to roll out a new and unique medical product in the domestic and foreign markets,” Aleksandr Sergeyev added.
