'Batka took control of the situation, and I am happy to return home’ Latvian about his detention in Belarus

I am happy that the situation with my detention at the border was resolved, Latvian citizen Daniel Tsirsis said in an interview with the Belarus 1 TV channel  BelTA has learned.

“I am super happy that I can return home. An investigation was carried out. Thank God, we were found innocent,” Daniel Tsirsis said.

Daniel said he knew that the Belarusian president kept track of the situation. “Yes, of course I knew. I even saw how it was covered in the media. The president said that anyone is welcome to Belarus, only without drugs. I absolutely agree with him on this. No country welcomes drugs. I do my best to stick to the law and rules everywhere,” he said.

The young man said that he was treated well in Belarus. “We were treated quite well. I have no complaints. We were allowed to rent an apartment. We could go to stores and cafes. We also went on an excursion. We were treated well. Everything was within the law. I am happy that I can return home. I knew that I was innocent. They said that if we were not guilty, everything would be fine. I believed and hoped that everything would be within the law, everything would be fine, and we would be let go,” Daniel said. “I am overjoyed that I am going home. I am glad that everything was within the law and justice prevailed. I am just happy I am going home.”

As BelTA has reported, four Latvian citizens were detained while crossing the border on 26 July. During a meeting with residents of the agro-town of Prudok on 2 August, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said that he had instructed to find out all the circumstances related to the detention of four Latvian citizens in Belarus. They were found carrying drugs for which they were detained by law enforcement officers to clarify all the circumstances.

According to Daniel Tsirsis, Belarus’ visa waiver is popular in Latvia. “If I am not mistaken, some 207,000 Latvian citizens visited Belarus last year. Or this year. It is quite a big number. It is a population of a city. So it is quite popular,” he said. “I have plans to visit Belarus next year. I would like to attend Viva Braslav, and so would many young people from my country. We were told that we were welcome to visit the country. I think I will pay another visit to Belarus.”
