Archeologists discover unique findings in Polotsk District

VITEBSK, 16 August (BelTA) – Unique findings have been discovered by archeologists in Polotsk District, BelTA learnt from Marat Klimov, scientific worker of the NASB Institute of History. Archeological excavations are held on the left bank of the Western Dvina near the village of Luchno. A big estate of a magnate was located there in the 11th-16th centuries. The archeologists were unable to find out the name of the owner as the estate was completely destroyed during the wars between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Muscovy. Thus, among the findings are the foundation of the buildings (nearly 40-60 square meters), remnants of big stoves with ornamented tiles, numerous household goods and weapons. Nearly 500 finds are considered as unique. Among them is a Vitovt’s denarius, a Pskov seal, rear tableware, six expensive book clasps. “Such a number of book clasps is usually found in the excavations of the whole towns. The prosperity and high status of an unknown magnate are also proved by the finding of nearly 15 Prague coins,” Marat Klimov said. “Such a discovery in one settlement can be viewed as great luck,” the archeologist said. Partaking in the archeological expedition are nearly 30 volunteers. These are the largest excavations organized in Belarus this year: the archeological dig is held on 1130 square meters. The construction of the Polotsk hydroelectric power plant will be launched there at the end of the year.
