Share of EV in Belarus' municipal fleet might reach 30% by 2025

There are plans to increase the share of electric vehicles in Belarus' public transportation up to 30% by 2025. The 2021-2025 draft program for electric transport promotion was discussed at the meeting of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers on 19 January, BelTA has learned.

“Today, everyone knows that promotion of electric transport is a modern trend; it is inevitably becoming part of our life. It is also relevant for our country in the context of the commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant,” Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said.

The draft program was developed by the National Academy of Sciences together with other interested parties. According to the head of government, working on the draft program was quite a challenge, there are still disagreements. First of all, they come from regional authorities and are related to the purchase of electric transport that will be produced under the program to update the municipal fleet. The Housing and Utilities Ministry has questions about the disposal of used batteries.

“It is necessary to work out and adopt systemic solutions for the entire electric transport industry. The program must be truly comprehensive - from research and development to incentives needed to encourage the production, purchase and operation of electric transport. That is, the program must cover everything that has to do with electric transport,” Roman Golovchenko said.
