All proposed amendments to Belarus' Constitution analyzed

The Constitutional Commission has considered all possible amendments to the Constitution of Belarus, Chairman of the Constitutional Court Piotr Miklashevich told journalists on 7 July, BelTA has learned.

“At its latest meeting, the Constitutional Commission carefully and in depth analyzed the proposals from its members and citizens regarding possible amendments to the preamble of the Constitution, the section on the foundations of the constitutional system, and the definition of the constitutional status of the Belarusian People's Congress. The agenda of today's meeting included formalized proposals regarding these matters. Thus, the Constitutional Commission has already discussed all sections of the Constitution and possible amendments to them,” Piotr Miklashevich noted.

According to him, plans are in place to consider the entire set of the formalized proposals regarding the amendments to the Constitution at the last meeting of the Constitutional Commission due on 21 July. “As the constitutional norms are highly generalized, they are closely connected with each other and complement each other. At the final meeting, we intend to check if the amendments might result in any contradictions and inconsistencies,” Piotr Miklashevich pointed out.

It is important to make the amendments to the Constitution understandable to people, Piotr Miklashevich stressed. “Not only lawyers, but also all citizens of the country will consult with the Constitution. On the one hand, the constitutional norms should be formalized properly, on the other hand, they should be worded in understandable terms that would not confuse ordinary citizens of Belarus,” he added.

The Constitutional Commission convened for its eighth meeting on 7 July. This meeting focused on the formalized proposals to amend the preamble of the Constitution, the section on the foundations of the constitutional system, and the definition of the constitutional status of the Belarusian People's Congress.
